Alberta’s Client-Directed Home Care (CDHCI) program

Empowering Albertans Through Client-Directed Home Care

Alberta’s Client-Directed Home Care Invoicing (CDHCI) program

Alberta’s Client-Directed Home Care Invoicing (CDHCI) program, developed by Alberta Health Services (AHS), is designed to give individuals greater control, flexibility, and independence in managing their home care. It allows clients to choose their caregivers, customize their services, and manage their own care budgets—ensuring care that fits their unique needs and preferences.

Multilevel Nursing Care is proud to be an approved service provider for the Client-Directed Home Care (CDHCI) program. This recognition by Alberta Health Services allows us to deliver personalized, high-quality care across Alberta—empowering clients to stay independent and comfortable in their own homes while receiving the support they deserve.

Why Choose Client-Directed Home Care?

🏡 Choice and Independence

With CDHCI, clients have the freedom to:

  • Select their own caregivers.

  • Create a care schedule that works best for them.

  • Decide what type of care and support they receive.

This approach ensures a personalized care experience that enhances comfort, consistency, and peace of mind.

💰 Control Over Care Budgets

Clients are provided with a budget to manage their home care services, giving them flexibility and choice.

  • Funds can be used to hire caregivers directly or through trusted agencies.

  • Clients decide how their care funds are allocated.

At Multilevel Nursing Care, we simplify the process by handling all direct billing to Alberta Blue Cross, so clients don’t have to pay out-of-pocket for approved services.

❤️ Comprehensive Services

Depending on individual needs and AHS assessment, CDHCI can cover:

  • Personal Care: Bathing, grooming, dressing, mobility assistance.

  • Home Support: Light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation.

  • Nursing Care: Medication management, wound care, health monitoring.

  • Palliative Care: Compassionate end-of-life support in a familiar environment.

Benefits of the CDHCI Program

  • Greater control and flexibility in managing home care.

  • Customized support tailored to personal needs and preferences.

  • No out-of-pocket expenses for approved services.

  • Trusted, compassionate caregivers chosen by the client.

  • Enhanced independence and the ability to live comfortably at home longer.

Self-Managed Care (SMC) Program

The Self-Managed Care (SMC) program takes independence even further by allowing eligible clients to receive funding directly from Alberta Health Services (AHS) to hire and manage their own caregivers. This gives clients complete control over who provides their care and how it is delivered.

Eligibility

To qualify for the SMC program, clients must:

  • Be assessed by AHS as requiring home care services.

  • Have stable health needs that can be managed safely at home.

  • Be able to manage the responsibilities of hiring and supervising caregivers—or designate someone to do so on their behalf.

Services That Can Be Funded

SMC funding can be used to hire caregivers for:

  • Personal Care: Assistance with bathing, grooming, dressing.

  • Homemaking: Housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation.

  • Respite Care: Temporary relief for family caregivers.

  • Additional Support: As outlined in the client’s individualized care plan.

Key Benefits

  • Full control over caregiver selection and scheduling.

  • Flexibility to adapt care to personal preferences and needs.

  • Opportunity to hire trusted family members or friends (where program rules permit).

How It Works

  1. Assessment: An AHS Case Manager assesses the client’s care needs.

  2. Funding Agreement: A plan is created outlining how funds can be used.

  3. Caregiver Management: The client (or their representative) hires, schedules, and manages caregivers directly.
